9/17 If students want to take the Putnam Exam this year, they
should send
an e-mail to Chris Heckman (checkman@math.asu.edu) saying they want
to take it, as well
as their 10-digit ASU ID number, sometime before mid-October. This
year's exam will be held on Saturday, December 6. The Putnam Exam is a
voluntary, free, challenging test consisting of two sections of six
problems each. Students are not allowed to use calculating devices,
notes, or books. ASU has occasionally given financial rewards to the
top three students at ASU, in addition to handing out awards at the
awards ceremony.

8/28 Office hours this semester have changed so that
more students can make it to some part of them. They are now
Tuesdays 11:30-12:30, Wednesdays 12:00-1:00, Fridays 11:00-12:00, and
by appointment.
-
8/27 The dates for Test 1 have been confirmed by the
Math Department
Testing Center: October 27-28.

8/22 For undergraduates: Igor Fulman is
running the Problem Solving Course for the
department. This 1-credit course was originally designed to prepare
students for the Putnam Exam, but it is not required that the students
take the Putnam. Students will learn problem-solving techniques and
encounter problems that are not just applications of material learned
in class. They will also get practice in presenting solutions in front
of a (small) group.
This course meets on Tuesdays from 3:40 to 4:30, in Language and
Literature, Room 14. The course number is 194, 294, 394, or 494,
depending on whether you are a freshman, sophomore, junior or senior.
(This enables you to take the course more than once.) Check the
Schedule of Courses for the SLNs.
-
8/22 The office hour on Friday, 8/29, is cancelled for
a doctor's appointment.

We will use the text Abstract Algebra by Dummit and Foote,
3rd edition. Many parts cover familiar material from MAT 442 and 444.
We will move over these sections quickly, mainly spending class time
answering questions. Then we will spend more time in lecture on new
material.
In particular, students should be familiar with the material in Chapter 0.
The most notable items there are the Euclidean Algorithm and reversing
it, the Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic, the definition of
Z/nZ (which is different from the initial one in
Fraleigh), and the definition of a permuation.
We will start with Appendix I, Cartesian Products and Zorn's Lemma.
